Canyoning is a mountaineering activity that belongs to a category of outdoor and exploratory sports which are practiced within a specific environment.
It consists of descending the lowest point of a water drainage, or “thalweg”, which includes a wide range of features: creeks, streams, rivers, gorges (more or less narrow and deep), with or without water, fast moving or not, presence of waterfalls, natural water pools, reaches and sub vertical parts.
Canyoning is based on moving down the canyon and passing natural obstacles.
Movement through a canyon can include activities such as walking, swimming, jumping, sliding, down-climbing, rappelling/abseiling and other rope progression techniques.
Canyoning requires specific equipment and techniques that must be adapted to the natural environment
